New Jersey C O U N C I L  O N  D E V E L O P M E N T A L   D I S A B I L I T I ES. The activities of the grant are being completed through a collaborative effort between the Progressive Center for Independent Living (PCIL) and The Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN).

        The Progressive Center for Independent Living, Inc. (PCIL) advocates for the rights of people with disabilities to achieve and maintain independent lifestyles. Through promotion of choice, self-direction and inclusion, PCIL works with people with disabilities and their families to ensure the same freedoms and civil liberties as everyone else.         The Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower families and inform and involve professionals and other individuals interested in the healthy development and educational rights of children. Through this collaboration, all children will become fully participating and contributing members of our communities and society. SPAN's foremost commitment is to children with the greatest need due to disability; poverty; discrimination based on race, sex, or language; geographic location; or other special circumstances. SPAN assists families and professionals with information and support via the telephone, its website, www.spannj.org, and more than 80 publications. SPAN also provides workshops on more than 40 topics in the areas of education, health, family strengthening, parent support, parent leadership, school reform, special education, education rights, and policy advocacy.      ADVOCACY w CAPACITY BUILDING w SYSTEM CHANGE

        The NEW JERSEY COUNCIL ON DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, originally sanctioned as the New Jersey Developmental Disabilities Council, is authorized by the federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act and New Jersey state law to promote systems change, coordinate advocacy and research for 1.2 million residents with developmental and other disabilities. The Council is a public body that serves as a watchdog agency. It serves in an advisory role to the Governor and the State Legislature. It provides training to build the capacity of individuals and groups to influence social policy. The Council's goal is to help people with disabilities and their families improve their lives.
